Special ODN Lifetime Achievement Award Presenter Gervase Bushe

Live via zoom meeting.

In this session Gervase will describe the Generative Change Model that has emerged from the research he and Bob Marshak have done into what makes contemporary OD methods succeed or fail.  Generative Change provides a way of thinking about how we use large group intervention methods that makes them more likely to be transformational.  Compared to the standard Planned Change Model, the Generative Change model is a better fit for today’s organizations that require greater agility and engagement.  His new book (The Dynamics of Generative Change: BMI Publishing, 2020) describes how a low-tech warehouse and distribution operation transformed into a highly engaged, collaborative, agile and fully digitized one in a little more than two years after the first phone call between the consultant and the Director. They accomplished this without a vision, without a plan, without training, any resistance to change, and only 1 external OD consultant.  They did it through an emergent, generative change process.

The Generative Change Model (Bushe, 2020) emerged from research looking for the the common elements of successful Large Group Interventions using a Dialogic OD mindset.  Combining complex adaptive systems with social construction, this approach to organizational change is more aligned with today’s needs for an agile and engaged workforce, and complex messy problems, than the traditional Planned Change Model.

In this session you will learn

  • What the generative change model is and how it is different from planned change
  • The type of change it is most appropriate for
  • Leadership requirements for successful use of a generative change approach
