IMPLEMENTATION OF CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROJECT (CIP) - CASE STUDY FROM SOLID WASTE DIVISION

Captial Project Improvement (CIP) projects are undertaken by King County to plan, design, and construct major utilities, environmental protection, and infrastructure needed to provide a multitude of services. Planning of CIP projects are performed by reviewing, analyzing, and integrating organizational processes and requirements. This presentation will describe the processes performed by the King County Solid Waste Division (SWD) for planning, managing, and delivering CIP projects. The PMO Manager of SWD, Zahid Khan, MSCE, PE, PMP, will share his experience in strategially planning projects, and lessons learned from delivering complex and politically high-profile projects.

Zahid Khan, MSCE, PE, PMP has over twenty-five years of professional experience in planning, leading, and implementing diverse public-sector capital projects, programs, and portfolios.  As the PMO Manager, he provided leadership to project managers, mentored and coached teams, and taught numerous project management classes through the Registered Education Provider (R.E.P.) program of the Project Management Institute (PMI®). Zahid is a nationally-recognized speaker, trainer, and mentor in project management and leadership, and has presented and published project management and leadership papers at various conferences such as PMI’s Global Congress, local chapters, and American Public Works Association conferences. 

In 2012, Zahid Khan founded Project Planning & Management, LLC (PP&M) HTTP://PROJECTPLANNINGMANAGEMENT.COM to help the organization by sharing knowledge and lessons learned gathered from his capital projects and programs leadership experience.  PP&M provides tailored solutions and training to help clients deliver successful projects by integrating their real-life experience with the PMI’s global standards of project management. 

As a follow up to the December 12 event, Zahid Khan will provide a guided tour of the Factoria Transfer Station in January.  Stay tuned for plant tour information.
